Why Pickens Tech

HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM


Our Hospitality and Tourism program prepares students for employment in the areas of hotel operations, restaurant and food service, travel and tourism, conventions and meeting services. Pickens take a hands-on approach to learning by immersing students in the hospitality and tourism industry. This program includes hotel and restaurant visits, a first-hand experience with business and leisure transportation, and exposure to industry professional that are hiring hospitality and tourism students for their businesses.

The first semester of this program provides students with an introduction to marketing and hospitality. Units of study during this course include:

  • Analysis of theoretical marketing processes
  • Strategies of product development, pricing, promotion and distribution, and their applications to businesses and the individual consumer
  • Marketing aspects of the hospitality industry
  • Exploration of hospitality and tourism career opportunities and meet with local employers.

The second semester, students will focus on customer service and event marketing. Topics include:

  • Marketing relationships with customers
  • Problem solving and understanding the importance of communicating with customers
  • Managing customer expectations by building customer rapport and creating positive outcomes
  • Event marketing including defining the importance and role of marketing, media and public relations in the event planning industry
  • Implement marketing and communication tools such as social media, promotional events, networking and blogs.

As a capstone, students will participate and complete a internship experience at an approved property.

Meet our Instructor

Kimberly R. Reiser, Hospitality and Tourism Instructor/ DECA Advisor

Kimberly Reiser is a Certified Hospitality Instructor through the American Hotel and Lodging Educational Institute who works with students to train them to be the next Hospitality and Tourism Professionals.

Kim completed a 120 hour internship at a local Marriott hotel and has been trained to be an interim innkeeper. This training and her love of travel equipped her to facilitate the learning of both secondary and postsecondary students in the Hospitality and Tourism Management Program or HTMP.

Kim is a member of the Colorado Hotel and Lodging Association and serves on their education committee, the Colorado Marketing Education Association as the President elect in 2017, the Colorado DECA Advisory Board for District 4, and is a board member at Visit Aurora.

Kim holds a Master's Degree and teaching certification in Marketing and Business from Buffalo State University, a Bachelor's Degree from the State University of New York at Fredonia in Business Management with a concentration in Marketing, and an Associate's degree from Villa Maria College.

Kim has taught at Pickens for four years, and in the Aurora Public Schools since 2003. She came to Pickens from Rangeview High School where she taught both Business and Marketing classes. She created a DECA chapter upon her arrival and built that chapter to over 125 members. Prior to moving to Colorado, Kim taught both high school and middle school Business and Marketing at Aurora Union Free School District in Western New York.

Kim believes that Pickens Technical College is a great opportunity for both educators and students to specialize in an area of their interests and expertise. The educational setting is nontraditional and the classrooms reflect the industries where students are preparing to work. The real world, hands-on learning, relevancy, and building of relationships that takes place on the campus of Pickens Technical College allows all students to flourish and become professionals in their chosen field.
