(formerly Precision Machining)


The Advanced Manufacturing Program consists of classroom and shop learning experiences which will permit the student successfully completing the program to be qualified as an entry level machinist and/or a manufacturing specialist.

Major contact areas covered in the program are machine shop safety, measuring instruments, blueprint reading, operations of general machine tools; such as, mill, lathes grinders, 3D printers, laser engraving, and heating.

In addition, students will gain valuable experience in the Job Shop course through the design and production for actual customer projects.

A focal point of the Advanced Manufacturing Program is instruction in the programming, set-up, and operation of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machines.

Apprenticeships may be available with local manufacturing shops and businesses.

Instructor Michael Townsend

Michael Townsend is the Advanced Manufacturing Instructor who works with students to learn the basics of manufacturing in a professional shop environment.

Michael has taught at Pickens for 20 years. He came to Pickens as a student where he took the program. He was then working at Honeywell Test Instrument Division and sponsored by the US Department of Labor's Journeyman Apprenticeship Program.

Mr. Townsend has worked in the manufacturing industry for 34 years. During that time, he has manufactured and built parts for numerous aerospace and military applications.

Michael is a Journeyman Machinist and currently works part time for Sypris Data Systems and is the Senior Machinist.

Mr. Townsend believes that Pickens Technical College is the best place to learn the necessary skills and take that knowledge forward to have a rewarding and lasting career.
