What Skills Do Facilities Maintenance Students Gain Through PTC’s Program?

If you love working with your hands, thinking critically, and troubleshooting machinery, a career in facilities maintenance might be right for you. You can earn a certificate through our Facilities Maintenance program here at Pickens where you’ll learn the most relevant technical skills, the basics of the industry, and gain a foundational knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, electrical wiring, major appliances including HVAC and other mechanical systems.

“Facilities maintenance” is a big umbrella term that refers to all of the tasks that go into keeping buildings functioning properly. Without regular maintenance, a once-livable space can quickly turn inhabitable. This makes facilities maintenance technicians invaluable, regardless of the economic climate.

There are some essential skills that those interested in becoming facilities maintenance tech should have mastered that go beyond technical ability. A few of those skills that you’ll learn in PTC’s Facilities Maintenance Technician program are:

Attention to Detail

A large portion of any facilities maintenance technician’s day will be spent examining intricate machinery, and closely checking to make sure all parts are in working order. Some of these issues will require laser focus to successfully troubleshoot, making attention to detail an essential skill. After all, what starts as a small problem can quickly become a large one – only making your job more stressful in the long run.

Fun fact: if you search by skill keywords on many online job sites and use the term “detail-oriented”, many maintenance-related openings appear towards the top.

Teamwork

The ability to collaborate and work with a group of people is important in almost any job, but especially so in building maintenance. Because you could be in charge of a large building, it is important to be able to effectively use your team to not only increase productivity but create a strong sense of community amongst your workforce.

Dexterity

The ability to correctly use manual tools in small spaces and with precision is imperative to effective facilities management. Not only do you want to make the correct repairs and, it is important to have a clear understanding of safety procedures and workplace practices.

Gain these skills and more at Pickens Technical College when you enroll in our Facilities Maintenance Technician program. All of the skills we discussed today (along with many, many more) will be touched upon during the duration of our two-semester program. In total, you’ll spend 600+ hours during both classwork and hands-on training.
