Veterinary Assistant Pathway

If you’re participating in Pickens Technical College’s Veterinary Assistant program, it’s probably because you love animals and you want to help them professionally. Working as a veterinary assistant is a great way to find a job working with animals much faster while spending much less money than by going right to veterinary school. You can gain experience and build relationships in the veterinary community before you make the leap to a full-fledged veterinarian if you choose. If you stay a veterinary assistant for the long haul, you’ve still chosen a rewarding, useful, and lucrative career working with animals.

One local animal adoption and advocacy organization are the Dumb Friends League. You’ve seen their billboards around Denver, and you may remember their television advertisements. The Dumb Friends League was founded in Denver back in 1910 and has since become the largest, independent, nonprofit community-based animal shelter and humane society in the Rocky Mountain region. And, as you may know, it’s a significant employer of veterinary assistants and other workers who want to pitch in.

A Cause to Get Behind

The Dumb Friends League strives to “end pet homelessness and animal suffering.” Its pet shelters adopt rehabilitated pets to loving homes, and its Solutions Veterinary Hospital in Denver provides veterinary services to pet owners who can’t afford veterinary care elsewhere. Solutions provide preventative care for pets, as well as injuries and sicknesses.

The Dumb Friends League also investigates reports of animal cruelty and neglect in 45 Colorado counties. In addition to dog and cat adoptions, the Dumb Friends League also receives horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules removed by law enforcement, rehabilitates them, and adopts them.

The services to pet owners the Dumb Friends League offers to Denver residents and beyond are many. From free dog training and socialization classes for dogs, cats, and rabbits to free and low-cost spay and neuter services in their mobile units around town, the Dumb Friends League helps pets and pet owners build happy lives together.

Working for the Dumb Friends League

You might already have your sights set on the Dumb Friends League, an immensely popular and recognizable animal welfare group in Colorado. But just in case you haven’t researched jobs there recently, there are a number of veterinary assistant jobs available in their Solutions Veterinary Hospital, as well as veterinary technician jobs, adoption assistants, animal care associates, public spay and neuter technicians, and even field services investigator.
